They're Towing in North Cambridge
[info]perich wrote in [info]davis_square
In case you thought they might not be serious about the Snow Emergency (see related posts), I just drove by a line of tow trucks parked or working on Sherman St. About six of them, I'd guess. The locals were standing on their porches laughing.

Make sure you're not parked in a Snow Emergency lane. That is all.

Red Velvet Cake
[info]junesrose wrote in [info]davis_square
Hello all. Faithful lurker but seldom poster here....so be kind.

Just wondering if any of you happen to have/recommend a recipe for Red Velvet Cake. My daughter and I are thinking of making it for Christmas, but as I've never made it before, I have no idea where to begin; don't know what it tastes like, or what it's supposed to taste like. It's just RED. (my fav color) :D Which we thought would be cool for Christmas.

Yes, I can google REDVELVETCAKE, but thought I'd ask for something from a live person for a change. Well, as alive as you can be on the other end of this machine, especially after a weekend Blizzard (in which I have YET to see snow falling...).

Anyhow, I want cake. :D Got any good recs?? Much appreciated.

Article about Harold Moore, the Spare Change Guy!
[info]lizzielizzie wrote in [info]davis_square
Few city-dwellers give much thought to the people that they meet each day. Take Harold Moore. The newspaper vendor, 48, held a cane in his left hand and the Dec. 17 issue of "Spare Change News" in his right at the Davis Square T stop in Somerville. "Season of Giving," the headline read. Little did Moore know that the very next morning, a gift would come to him - and not just a Dunkin' Donuts gift card, either.

This season, patron Tom Chevalier organized about 20 people to raise $275 for the hard-working newspaper man. Moore doesn't earn that much in a week.

[info]lauraruth wrote in [info]davis_square
Dear Neighbors,

Our annual Christmas Cantata will go on, snow or not, tomorrow morning at 10 AM. We've prepared a wonderful Cantata, and we will present a holy word in music and scripture. There will be singing, drumming, praying, all followed by a festive brunch.

You're invited to brunch.

Need a place to go to share the spirit of the season? We'd love to see you and feed you.

Thanks!

Snowy photo walk?
[info]gandalfgreyhame wrote in [info]davis_square
I figure I can't be the only photog here who thinks snow is extremely pretty, so would anyone be interested in gathering for a romp through the snow with cameras the next time it comes down in a picturesque way?

(The last time was a bit wet but I still got some decent shots in it!)

Snow shoveling
[info]bobobb wrote in [info]davis_square
In my old town, there were kids that would go door to door after a snow storm and shovel sidewalks for $20. I'm noticing that that isn't the norm here in Somerville. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any enterprising youths that might be interested in shoveling my sidewalk, stairs and driveway -- price negotiable.

BuyWithMe Deal - Tu y Yo

Another good Davis Sq deal on BuyWithMe. $20 for $40 at Tu y Yo. I love mexican food, and hear great things about this little restaurant. Looking forward to giving it a try! Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Edited on 2009-12-19 to lower the price of the futon to $200 and the Thinkpad to $50.

Where's the knitting lady?
[info]brewso wrote in [info]davis_square
About a month ago, I came across a woman making lovely knit goods for sale outside the Holland St. Exit. I commissioned her (well, I asked her) to make my baby some mittens and booties, and she said they'd be ready in 2 days. I wasn't able to make it back for about a week, and ever since then I haven't seen her when I head to the square (which, admittedly, isn't all that often). Has anyone else seen her lately? Do you know if she has certain hours or days when she's there?

Just to head this one off at the pass:

If you're on AT&T and your phone is even crappier than usual tomorrow at around 3PM, it's not Davis-exclusive, that's because a bunch of iPhone users across the country are running data-intensive applications to protest AT&T's crappy network. It's called Operation Chokehold. Enough people are angry about this, and AT&T's network is so stinkin' miserable, that it's going to make a dent. Just FYI.

What will become of the Ball Square White Hen Pantry?
[info]ron_newman wrote in [info]davis_square
7-Eleven buys New England Pantry

I don't think this is good news for our neighborhood convenience store and deli: "The company anticipates that stores operating under the White Hen Pantry brand will begin converting to stores to the 7-Eleven brand in 2010."

Parker Farms update
[info]emcicle wrote in [info]davis_square
IF you read both Davis_Square and Parkerfarmcsa, you'll see this twice... sorry.

Hello all-Well,winter really is here-down to the single digits this morning as I went out to get my coffee-I actually happy that it is so cold, the firewood business has been a bit slack the past few weeks with the mild weather, now, with the mercury dropping the phone is starting to ring for orders-much needed as I rebuild from a devastating year.
In the meantime,I remain frustrated at my attempt to rebuild the mailing list so I can reconnect with all who participated in the 2009 farm share program-which is important as I have some important news regarding signing up for the 2010 season,as well as vouchers redeemable for produce that I want to distribute to compensate for the weather reduced yields of 2009.
So if you could please forward this note to friends who may have participated, post it on your blogs, myspace, facebook ect,I would appreciate it greatly. If you are getting this message it means you are already on the list and will be receiving the previously mentioned update,as well as all other news from the farm!
Thank you,and I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!-Steve
